For over half a century, Ewart “Sonny” Bowie Sr. has bean a fixture of the Inwood Little League community. With 51 years of coaching under his belt, he holds the distinction of being the league’s longest-tenured member. When he began volunteering in 1974, Inwood Little League was celebrating its 24 Anniversary.
Like many Inwood coaches, Sonny’s journey began when his two sons began playing baseball. Over the decades, Sonny coached across every division, from the Minors and Majors to the Juniors and Seniors. In 1984, he began managing Carrot Top in the Seniors Division, a team he still manages today, though it was briefly renamed Apple Bank in the 1980s. “I requested to bring back [the sponsor] Carrot Top.” Sonny recalls. “It just felt right.”
From then until now, he has racked up an astounding 17 championships, including five consecutive titles in the Spring League, capped off by a Carrot Top victory in this year’s Diamond Anniversary Season.
His coaching résumé may be full of wins, but Sonny doesn’t coach for trophies. For him, it’s about player development and teaching kids to play the game the right way. “The thing about baseball is it’s very tactical,” he explains. “You stay to the basics, but you also implement your own techniques. You might not have the best players, but if they follow the script and do what you need, you’ll find success.”
